13th Age: More Icon Ideas and Campaign plans for my Eyes of the Stone Thief JRPG

Image
So, small updates. I am jumping between projects like… well like a squirrel on crack. My players haven't written a letter yet, but at least they've contacted me that it's going to take longer. So I continue with the planning phase. Not much is happening right now, because besides the real world job is very very exhausting. More on Icons First of all I thought about the icons and had some great hints from the 13th Age community on Discord, especially Gitrid#2788 had some cool ideas. I don't want to replace all icons with NPCs from our world, but a few that intervene in the game. See more on the general idea in my last post. KhornedBeef from Tanelorn Forums had the idea with Archmage as a level designer, I expanded that a bit and wanted to add some funny twists. Lich King is called L. King in our world and has built an alter ego into the game: Dr. WillyNilly, who is supposed to hook the kids up to FEEM (the Friendship Energy Extraction Machine). That doesn't work out

Dungeon Madness: Finalizing tests and beginning mass production

Finding a wall system I like So let's see how we end up with this proof of concept:  When I started planning my magnetic dungeon system, my first idea was to make the walls in a similar like the floors: Thin metal covered on both sides with thin XPS Foam. In this system, only the pillars holding these walls would have to be magnetic. First plans that start an interesting jounrey After initial tests, I threw the entire plan in the bin and came up with a new plan. It was just too complicated and would have required special tools to cut the metal sheets... An alternative approach worked, but was too time consuming. When you build a dungeon, you need a lot of walls and time is quickly a limiting factor. Although t works, it's too complicated I then spontaneously said: Fuck it. I'll just make it in a classical way and use XPS Foam all the way. The downside: The walls are thicker and need more space now. The upside: It's fast as long as you have a hot wire cutter like a Pro

13th Age: Icons in the JRPG idea // Map tests

Image
Well, it's been a while but I did not forget the Stone Thief idea and actually did work a little bit on it. Mostly, I am waiting to see how my players will react to the flyer I've designed... so far there is no feedback so maybe the whole campaign won‘t happen… But I've got two things to discuss this time: Maps and Icons. Map Tests I've been thinking about how I can design maps that have light pixel art but are still quick to make. Normally, DungeonDraft is my tool of choice, but it can't do pixel art. And it can't do isometric as far as I know. So it seems I can only have two of three: Speed, Pixel Art, Isometric. And because I definitely want Pixel Art, I decided for speed as well and actually, it's quite simple in the end. Step 1 - Design a map in Dungeondraft Just a room that will get filled - nothing strange here Step 2 - Export map once as dd2vtt, once as png. Pixelate the png. Step 3 - Import the dd2vtt into Foundry, then all the walls will be transfe

Against the Darkmaster: What my players should not know // Campaign Plans

Image
And if you are one of my players, stumbling upon this blog post: Shush! If you are NOT only of my players: pspspspsps I guess 😂 So I already told a bit about my vsD Campaign and the overall background  (what my players know) and how I've prepared all that stuff in a booklet . And now for the parts that my players should not know... After Arthur conquered the Otherworlds, he established the "Great Kingdom Between the Worlds"; however, a great plague broke out in Arthur's world (possibly the black plague? No one knows, but I will describe it accordingly), which spread to all the other worlds. And Arthur himself was affected. In his desperation to escape this plague and conquer death, Arthur decides to take the last Otherworld as well, hoping for immortality: Annwn. This is also known as the World of the Dead and he starts conquering this world with an alliance of humans, dwarves, elves, halflings and Fir Bolg, but the people living there resist.  Transformers 5: The la

L5R YZE: First draft

Image
Here is now a first effort for an implementation of the L5R setting with the Year Zero engine.  Basically, I tried not to make the game at the complexity level of Forbidden Lands, but I desperately wanted to add an element that reflected the samurai's fighting skills and hinted at the different stances. Accordingly, I introduced Weapon Dice, which can be set to both attack and defense. The Techniques often correspond with this element accordingly.Concerning the Techniques, I’ve got carried away. I just wanted to note some examples, however, I went a bit overboard - designing such elements makes sense only, when the core is stable. But I had fun, so that’s that :-D Let's see how these rules work in an actual example, this time we'll take a quick Skirmish. Side question here: Would you be interested in some Youtube Videos, testing the rules? I could do some screencasts, if it's easier to do it that way than to read it in written form. L5R YZE: Hacking the Year Zero Engine to play Legend of the Five Rings

Image
Aaah, I'll be damned. You know the feeling when you have an idea but you're already working on too many projects anyway? I'm unfortunately like that constantly , (see the title of my blog) and then I have to bring these ideas to (digital) paper quickly, because otherwise it drives me crazy. Really, I ponder it forever and it blocks me from doing anything else.  That's why this is just a first thought and maybe this might invite creative ideas from your side. I would be glad about exchange. First of all:   I really love me some Samurai Drama (image taken from FFG ) I think Legend of the Five Rings is fucking cool and from my point of view, the fifth edition actually has a lot of advantages compared to older versions (although I only listened to the older ones as podcasts and have read them a bit - no actual play experience here). My basic thoughts about L5R5e are: Roll and Keep makes more sense in the 5e, the combinations of rings and action words (skills) is great in a

Against the Darkmaster: Trying to get my players hyped

Image
I wrote in my last vsD-post about what influences I want to have in my campaign. Now, in order to not give my players an eternally long litany and not explain everything forever and thrice, I thought I'd try something new. I created a small booklet that describes the rough structures of the world through in game texts, searched for fancy artwork from the net and combined it all.  Mountain Path, by Reza Afshar You can have a look at the booklet here The translation is certainly terrible in some parts, to save time I used DeepL. However, I am really impressed by the program! I hope it is still enjoyable , if there is interest from some people, I'll gladly provide the file again in a extended translation.  My players were thrilled and absolutely hooked - and so am I. It's awesome how much easier it has become to design and print something like this. It didn't cost a lot of money either (I got a small edition of ten booklets for about 60 Euros) and the result is definitely
